The idea of a museum has been in the making since the site of Grumentum was identified in the 17th century, and after the first fortuitous discoveries following agricultural work, the two local collections (Danio and Perrone), now largely dispersed, were created. Following the first excavations performed in the urban area (Capitolium) by the archpriest Carlo Danio in the early 18th century, those of the late 19th century by the inspector Caputi (the others by Lacava and De Cicco are unpublished), and finally the work conducted by Sestieri in 1951, but, above all, thanks to the work of Dinu Adamesteanu, the first Superintendent of Antiquities in Basilicata, who began the regular exploration of the urban area of Grumentum in 1969, later assisted by Liliana Giardino, the idea was able to come to fruition.
