The ancient centre of Armento is best known for the discovery of extraordinary artefacts, such as the golden crown of Critonius, or the bronze satyr, now preserved at the Antikensammlungen in Munich, but the exceptional nature of the finds reflects the importance of an archaeological area that falls within the Appennino Lucano National Park. The sanctuary of Serra Lustrante must have been an important meeting place and gathering place for the local aristocracies of the indigenous centres of the middle valley, within the Lucanian territorial organisation.
