The Paneveggio Forest

Immediately downstream from the Paneveggio artificial lake - or Forte Buso, named after the nearby Austrian fort - state road 50, which climbs from Predazzo, enters the Nature Park. It winds for about 15 kilometres, until just beyond Passo Rolle, above San Martino di Castrozza. The lake, with a capacity of about 30 million cubic metres, is the result of an artificial dam built in the 1950s, an imposing concrete arch-gravity dam anchored on the porphyry cliff. By means of underground pipes, the water is conveyed to the opposite side of the Lagorai chain, to the Caoria power station. Just beyond the lake lies the small village of Paneveggio.
