The “Detention basin of the Secchia River” nature reserve is located a little north of Via Emilia, between the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia. It protects a 260-hectare large wetland formed as a consequence of important hydraulic works to mitigate the floods of the Secchia and safeguard the floodplain wood growing along the river. Region Emilia-Romagna established the nature reserve in 1996; its management is entrusted to the Authority for Parks and Biodiversity of Central Emilia. Its offices are in Rubiera (Reggio Emilia), inside the 16th-century building of Corte Ospitale, which still keeps many of its original architectural features.
