The man presence in the expansion area of the Secchia river has been ascertained since the Neoeneolithic period (3500-1800 BC). Even the Roman period is witnessed by numerous works and furnishings. In medieval times, these lands were crossed by wayfarers and pilgrims going to Rome, who found refreshment in the hospices along the way. The Reserve includes, in addition to the expansion area, a stretch of river of 6 km and some surrounding agricultural lands, ensuring the protection and conservation of habitats, flora and fauna and enhancing the improvement of the landscape and of the biological diversity.
