The Castle of Santa Severa and the archaeological site of Pirgy are one of the most important locations of historical and archaeological interest of the Tyrrhenian coasts. As a matter of fact, during the early Etruscan period Pirgy was one of the most important landing stages for the Greeks and the Phoenicians.

The Museum was established in 1993 and it has not yet been completed.
It is situated in the area of the Castle of Santa Severa, in the
premises called "La Polveriera" (educational section), "Il Caminetto"
(exhibition hall), "La Casa dei Somari" (archaeology workshop). "La
Polveriera" aims at illustrating the main sites of historical and
archaeological interest existing in the municipal territory.
