The Marine Protected Area opens to blind people. Thanks to the Association Albatros and APT of Lecce, Porto Cesareo MPA offers today guided diving tours for blind people, recognized by CMAS (World Underwater Federation).
The tour guides and instructors have been trained within the course held in Santa Maria di Leuca from 1st to 5th September 2009.
Four instructors, three tour guides, two blind divers on Saturday 5th September at 8.00 p.m. in the wonderful setting of Corigliano d'Otranto Castle have obtained the patent "Albatros progetto Paolo Pinto Scuba Blind International Cmas". From this moment, also blind divers will have the opportunity to discover the wonderful seabed of Salento, exploring the marine beauties like the other tourists. The underwater itineraries (or blue trails) within a marine protected
area contribute to reach the main aims of the protected area itself,
since they belong to the fields of scientific research and
environmental education.
As a matter of fact, the underwater
itineraries follow a fixed route and give the opportunity to study,
through a continuous monitoring activity, the evolution of the
protected marine communities and the influence that such communities
have in the recolonization of the adjacent seabed.
