Mt. Cofano is a promontory deriving from the uprising of imposing marine calcareous deposits of the Triassic period: the several animal fossils contributed to form the scaffold of this mountain (659m above sea level). The calcareous nature of the mountain characterizes all its morphology: the rocky pinnacles of the highest areas, the steep coastal walls, the southern slopes which give origin to a thick stratum of deposits accumulating at the foot of the mountain and forming the so-called "breccia" environments.
