The Monte Lanaro Regional Nature Reserve (Volnik in Slovenian) was established in 1996 with the regional law no. 42 "Norme in materia di parchi e riserve naturali regionali" (Regulation regarding the regional parks and nature reserves). It includes 285 hectares belonging to the municipalities of Sgonico - Zgonik and Monrupino - Repentabor in the province of Trieste, and it borders with Slovenia in the north. Today, the whole territory of the reserve is included in the SPA IT3341002 "Aree Carsiche della Venezia Giulia" (Karst Areas of Venezia Giulia) and in the SAC IT 3340006 "Carso triestino e goriziano" (Treiste's and Gorizia's Karst region), representing an element of great value. Along with the Monte Orsario Rserve it represents the Karst upland.
