A Sacred Mountain is a devotional structure situated on a mountain slope. It consists of a series of chapels or aediculae with representations - paintings and sculptures - of scenes from the Life of Christ, the Virgin Mary, or the Saints. A reconstruction of the New Jerusalem, the Sacred Mountains gave pilgrims the opportunity to visit the Sacred Places with the reproduction on a smaller scale of the buildings where the Passion took place. They are situated on a high mountain, in an isolated position from the town center and people usually reach them with a pilgrimage.
