The Bottaccio della Visona, situated in the western sector of the former bed of the Bientina Lake, is the remaining important area that was part of the great woods that once extended over the plain around Lucca.
The so called "Bottaccio" and its surface of about 20 hectares entirely belongs to the ANPIL named after it extending over about 46 hectares in the southern side of the municipality of Capannori. The waters flowing from the near Pisani Mounts are then closed within banks, so that they remain in the area for many months creating wetland areas that work as transitional areas before the forest. The landscape is very different from the woodland characterized by the presence of centuries-old english oaks, wet meadows, groves of reeds and ponds.
