In front of the Tower, submerged by water, there is what more than one researcher considers to be the ancient port of the town of Hadria, probably dating back to the Roman period.
The fortress has been named after the homonymous torrent situated at 500 meters south, in the Municipality of Silvi; it springs from the hills of Atri and is characterized by the presence of very ancient fountains. According to the historians Strabone and Sorricchio, it was the mouth of the ancient port of Atri and represented a landing place for ships loaded with cereals coming from Apulia and Sicily.
