The monastic complex of the San Michele Arcangelo Abbey in Passignano (also known as "Badia a Passignano) represents the Protected Area's ideal and material center. The Abbey is surrounded by the cypresses and houses of the old village of Badia a Passignano: beyond the historical and architectural significance of the Abbey and the presence of plant and animal species protected by the regional laws, the area is particularly important also from the landscape point of view.
The Protected Area includes the heart of the Vallombrosa system situated between the two centers of Passignano and Poggio al Vento, and it is constituted by completely wooded slopes, cultivated areas as vineyards and olive groves and many rural buildings belonging to the old medieval organization of Vallombrosa.
