Among the several itineraries of the protected area, we suggest this
panoramic tour: a tiring itinerary of great landscape value. The ideal
seasons to appreciate it are spring and autumn; it is advisable to
avoid the warmest periods; however you can also discover it in the dry
winter periods.
Walking time: about 5-7 hours; total difference in height: 1,000m.
The itinerary leaves from the town center of Reggello (395m) and leads
towards Pontifogno along the CAI trail no. 15, corresponding to an
ancient paved road. Go ahead along a flat trail until you reach the
houses of Lavana. Go beyond them and take the CAI trail no. 14A which,
with a steep slope, will lead you from 600m to the 1,071m of Poggio
Massa Nera, where you will enjoy a wonderful panorama.
The itinerary continues along the CAI trail no. 14 following the ridge,
using in part forest roads. Once you reach a hairpin bend (1,298m), go
back to the trail and, along the mountain ridge (called "il Malpasso")
you will get to Capanna delle Guardie (1,360m). After reaching the
highest point of the tour, we can rapidly go down to Case S. Antonio
(937m) along trail no. 15.
Now you have two possibilities: descending along the CAI trail no. 15,
along the valley of Borro di Sant'Antonio, or following an alternative
route (marked but with no number) leading - along a forest road - to
Massa Falco (panorama), and then - along a trail - to Fornace di S.
Antonio, Meriggioni Waterfall, Masino Charcoal Pile, and the valley of
Borro delle Fornaci. The alternative route is longer and not
recommended in case of bad weather. Both choices will lead us back to
trail no. 15 and to the departure point.
