This itinerary represents a very short detour from the main route along the river Po, created to enable the visit to the castle and the historical town center of Moncalieri, fourth town in Piedmont for number of inhabitants. The heart of the old town is Vittorio Emanuele II square, dominated by the symbols of the civil power (the town hall) and religious power (Santa Maria della Scala).
The most important and precious jewel of the town is the Royal Castle, the favorite of the cadet branch of the House of Savoy (Carignano branch, including Carlo Alberto and Vittorio Emanuele II, first King of Italy).
Since 1997, Moncalieri Castle, like all the residences of the House of Savoy, belongs to the World Heritage List and is safeguarded by Unesco.
