Itinerary L - Km 6.4 - Superga Basilica

  • Trail Conditions: By bike
  • Interest: Geology, Panorama, Religion, Hystory, Photography

This itinerary leads to Superga Basilica, at 670m s.l.m. Thanks to its position, the basilica represents one of the main reference points in Piedmont together with Monviso, since it can be seen when the sky is clear from dozens of kilometers away. Consisting of a big centrally planned church, a cloister, and a monastery, the complex was planned by Filippo Juvarra, who worked for many other masterpieces of the baroque style characterizing the Savoy period, like Stupinigi Hunting Lodge and Palazzo Madama in Turin. On the back of the monument, a small museum celebrates the football team of the "Grande Torino", which was wiped out here in 1949, when the plane bringing it home crashed on the slope of the hill. At the terminus of the rack tramway there is the Visitor Center of Collina Torinese Park.
