The presence of visitors in the area of the Duino Cliffs has considerably grown after the inauguration, occurred in 1987, of the Path called "Rilke" after the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who stayed at the Castello Nuovo (New Castle) in Duino in 1912, hosted by the princess Marie, and who wrote the "Duino Elegies", making Duino and its cliffs famous all over the world. The Rilke path was realized by the Province of Trieste and of the municipality of Duino-Aurisina which restored a previously existing path. With this project, the path has been enlarged, covered with gravel for a length of 1,700 meters and, in the most dangerous stretches, equipped with a fence. Some panoramic points have been fixed and adequately protected, two of them were realized on the ruins of military bunkers dating back to World War II. In 2000 it was realized the connection between the present path and the built-up area of Duino. In the late 2000 it was realized a new path, with a length of 200 meters, accessible also for people with reduced and hindered motor skills, which departs from Duino and reaches a recently realized observation point on the sea.
