The trail crosses two main environmental types: the Turkey oak and Downy oak mixed woodland - which used to be coppiced until not so many years ago - and the pinewoods used for reforestation, which can be found around the farmhouses ("casali") and in the areas that were once cultivated or used as pastures.
It is the ideal trail for those visitors who love short and easy hikes, and it is right for everybody, without any age limit. The trail starts from the restaurant/hotel "La Monaldesca". Unlike the other itineraries in Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve, "La Fonte" trail can also be ridden on horseback. As a matter of fact, along the way you will find Casale Palombaro, equipped for a stop and with accommodation for horses, by previous agreement with the management.
The trail is approx. 3 km long; it develops in the northern part of Latium, and is marked with special pink-painted markers. It does not present steep slopes, except for the final part before the arrival. Along the trail, visitors will find three old farmhouses that once housed as many peasant families: "Monaldesca", "Poder Vecchio" - today a ruin - and "Palombaro". The trail has been named after a spring of very fresh water collected in a drinking trough that can be used also by horses.
