It was established in 1981 by the transboundary inhabitants on the occasion of the first edition of Odprta meja - Confine aperto (open boundaries), and since then it has become a steady tradition.
The path corresponds to the ancient salt way which had been used for centuries by the traders of Carniola to reach the saltworks of Trieste by way of Zaule. According to the legend, it is possible that this is the same path which was crossed by Martin Krpan (a legendary slovenian character), who smuggled Istria's salt by carrying it on his mule.
The walk along the "sentiero dell'amicizia" (friendship path) can start from Bagnoli della Rosandra -Boljunec by following the CAI path no. 1 up to Bottazzo-Botač. From here one crosses the bridge, border between Italy and Slovenia, and keeps on going following the road signs up to Beka-Ocizla. A beautiful route between forests and karst moor.
