In 1996, Siena Provincial Administration established 11 Nature
Reserves covering about 8 thousand hectares of territory with a high
environmental, naturalistic, historical, and cultural value, whose
different protected environments house rare animal and vegetable species
of great scientific and conservation interest.
The Reserves were
formally established by Siena Provincial Council (resolutions no.
38 of 21.03.1996 and no. 127 of 17.07.1996), according to art. 15 of
L.R. 49/95 "Norme sui parchi, le riserve naturali e le aree naturali
protette di interesse locale" (Rules regarding the parks, nature
reserves, and protected areas of local interest).
The 11 Nature Reserves form a System of Protected Areas whose aim is to
ensure and promote, in a coordinated manner, the conservation and
enhancement of the environment, the landscape, the historical-cultural
and naturalistic heritage.
4 Reserves, Basso Merse, Farma, La Pietra and Cornate e Fosini, extend also in the territory of the Province of Grosseto.
The management aims at the conservation of the ecosystems, the
promotion of compatible production activities and spare time
activities, the development of scientific and research activities, and
the promotion of the coordinated information and environmental
education activities.
Size and shape of the Reserves depend on the features and distribution
of the resources to safeguard; the areas vary from a minimum of 240 ha (S. Agnese Wood Nature Reserve) to a maximum of 2000 ha (Upper Merse Nature Reserve).
